This rollicking, foot-stomping musical, based on Al Capp's hillbilly comic strip, opens on "A Typical Day" in Dogpatch, USA where the motley and lovable characters who inhabit this burgh introduce themselves to the audience. Senator Jack S. Phogbound has called the town together at a "Cornpone Meeting" to announce that the Government has selected Dogpatch as the "most unnecessary place in the whole country" and is going to use it as a nuclear test site. The evacuation of the town will upset the traditional Sadie Hawkins Day Race, where single females chase the town bachelors in hopes of "catching them" in matrimony. Daisy Mae hoped to finally cat Li'l Abner Yokum and be wed by Marryin' Sam this year. Daisy hatches a plan with Mammy and Pappy Yokum to find something necessary to save their way of life from extinction. Mammy's famous Yokumberry tonic, a bodybuilding potion, saves the day and is sped off the Washington for further testing. General Bullmoose gets wind of this incredible tonic and wants to control the rights. He enlists his shapely girlfriend, Appassionata Von Climax, to help him. She is to enter the Sadie Hawkins Day Race and win Abner for herself, with the help of Evil Eye Fleagle, a man who can paralyze with his eyes. But Daisy has got a secret weapon of her own – Stupefyin' Jones, the beautiful and shapely wife of Available Jones, who can "stupefy" a man dead in his tracks with a wiggle. Adding to the tension is Earthquake McGoon who would like to have Daisy Mae for himself and plans to sabotage her efforts to catch Abner at the Sadie Hawkins Day Race. Will evil be stopped? Will the town be saved? Will true love prevail? Well, wait and see!
